Family counseling aims to promote better relationships and deeper understanding within the structure of a family. My role is to provide a safe place where all parties involved can learn to communicate more effectively. Often, the growth associated with therapy requires learning and practicing new methods of communication and behavior. While changing learned behaviors and habits is difficult, I will act as your coach and support throughout the transition.
In addition to coaching, I frequently work with the family to reflect on incorporating more mindful communication into their relationships. Because of this, family counseling is often as much encouragement as it is instruction and effort.
In fact, family counseling often helps all parties involved learn new and useful ways to communicate, slowly replacing the old habits that led to disagreement and conflict. As the professional in the room, I will often offer observations that aim to point out where communication can be improved, especially when it might be bringing more negativity into the daily lives of children involved.
When it comes to family counseling, children often need a safe space to express themselves without judgment, expectation or anger. This is a benefit that incorporating a professional can bring, offering a less stressful environment at home and a space to share concerns respectfully. Children may see our sessions as a way to discuss the patterns they see at home and are concerned about without facing the feeling of being unheard, which may happen at home.
